REUBEN'S FOOLISH ACT IS ONE OF THE BEAST THAT DESTROY THE BEST
Dear reader, Bilhah, the woman that Reuben had sex with was much older than him. Surprisingly, she may be even older or at the same age with Reuben's mother, Leah. Bilhah was a maidservant to laban, the father of Leah, Reuben's mother. When Jacob married Rachel, Laban his father-in-law, gave Bilhah to be the maidservant to Rachel his daughter.
"And Laban gave his maid Bilhah to his daughter Rachel as a maid"
. -(Gen 29:29 NKJV).
Bilhah knew Jacob before he married Leah, Reuben's mother, and Rachel her younger sister. She was an age long maidservant in Laban's family. But as we read in the Bible passage above, laban gave Bilhah to Rachel as a maid after she married Jacob. In the same vein, when Leah married Jacob, Laban also gave Zilpah his maid to Leah as a maid.
"And Laban gave his maid Zilpah his daughter Leah as a maid". -(Gen 29:24NKJV).
Therefore, both Zilpah and Bilhah were age-long maidservant of Laban, but he gave them as maids to his daughters after their marriage. Bilhah and Zilpah were with Laban, Leah and Rachel before the arrival of Jacob. They knew when Jacob married the two daughters of laban. Bilhah knew when Reuben was not yet conceived and also when Leah was pregnant. She was aware when Reuben was born because all of them lived together in the same place.
Bilhah knew when Reuben was in the womb and when he was born. She saw Reuben in all his developmental levels and growth. She saw Reuben as a toddler, a baby, a little child; until when he grew as a man. She was far much more older than Reuben. Also note that Reuben grew up in Laban's family as a child but he saw Bilhah ad an adult. How come that Reuben had sex with such an old woman? Did Bilhah seduce or lure him into it? Were they friends and later sex partners?
These and many more critical questions are bubbling and clamoring for answers. Honestly, one ought to be surprised at what exactly attracted Bilhah to Reuben. A young man of his age having sex with an old woman in the secret spells danger. And it is against this backdrop that we shall look at the seed of lust that triggered Reuben's sexual weakness that jeopardized his destiny and truncated the plan and purposes of God for his family.
